College Football Week 5 Preview

This week, my two favorite teams play again.  Penn State has started off the season 4-0 and barely won with a nail biter against Iowa last week.  Their star running back Saquon Barkley, in my opinion, proved last week to be the best player in the country last week with 211 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown and 94 receiving yards.  He has produced for the Nittany Lions this week and is not only the top rusher for them but also the top receiver for them too.  No players on the offensive side of the football for Indiana have had any particularly great seasons so far.  However, something that stuck out to me was that the Hoosiers' offense is averaging 35.7 points per game.  They also have played some pretty good football teams, having scored 21 points against then ranked number two Ohio State Buckeyes.  Also, Indiana is coming off a 52 point week which could fuel their offense specifically their running back Morgan Ellison coming of a 186 yard week. I could see the Hoosiers put up 20+ points against Penn State this week.  However, I do have the Penn State Nittany Lions winning this game because they struggled with the Iowa Hawkeyes last week and I just don't see them struggling with an unranked team for a second week in a row.  Also, I expect Penn State wide receiver Juwan Johnson have a big game this week.  The Hoosiers tallest starting cornerback is only 6'0 while Johnson is 6'4.  So I expect that Trace McSorley will be looking for number 84 in the red zone this week.  I expect the Nittany Lions to beat the Indiana Hoosiers 45-20.

Notre Dame is ranked again this time at 22.  They have started off strong at 3-1 but still show patches of the poor execution that last year's team had.   Brandon Wimbush has proven that he can run the ball very well but still has not shown me anything in particular that has made me confident when he drops back to pass the football.  One thing that the Irish will have to do is tackle better.  They have missed countless tackles this season and it is just frustrating to watch.  The Irish have to play backup running back Dexter Williams more this week.  It seems that every time he touches the ball he makes a big play.  If the Irish can rush well with two running backs then they can be a tough team to stop.  The Miami RedHawks have a quarterback who has thrown for 881 yards and eight touchdowns with only two interceptions.  He has a potential to carve up the secondary of the Irish.  And also will special teams coach Brian Polian please stop putting Chris Finke back on punts!  He does absolutely nothing positive!  Just put C.J. Sanders back there.  I think that the Irish will win this game 34-22.  I personally am not a fan of head coach Brian Kelly, and believed last year that he should have been fired but this year he has made the team much better.

The College Gameday game this week is number two Clemson vs number twelve Virginia Tech.  Both teams are undefeated and it is conference play.  Clemson has had some big wins such as the then ranked 13 Auburn Tigers and the then 14 Louisville Cardinals.  These teams are very much alike statistically, both averaging around 40 points per game, allowing around 10 points each, and each earning around 510 yards per game on offense.  However, the key I think is that Clemson allows almost 100 yards less than the Hokies.  That is one of the reasons why I have the Tigers winning and the other is two people you may have heard of, Kelly Bryant and Dabo Swinney.  Dabo has proven to be one of the top coaches in the nation.  Kelly Bryant, to me, is an automatic Heisman candidate if they win this game.  Tigers win 24-21.

Another exciting game to watch is the number five USC vs the number sixteen Washington State.  Sam Darnold is thought to be the best quarterback in the country but I disagree.  To start the season I did. However, now I do not think so because the Trojans have had multiple close games including against unranked Texas, unranked Western Michigan, and unranked Cal.  This could be worrying to Trojans fans.  Also, Sam Darnold has nine touchdowns with seven interceptions.  Which is not a good ratio. Additionally, Cougars' QB Luke Falk is having an absurdly great season.  He has 1378 yards and 14 touchdowns with one interception.  That is why I have my first bold prediction which is Washington State beats USC.  That's right, Cougars win 30-27 on game winning field goal by senior kicker Erik Powell.

Heisman Watch:

  1. Saquon Barkley - Penn State Nittany Lions
  2. Baker Mayfield - Oklahoma Sooners
  3. Lamar Jackson - Louisville Cardinals
Dark Horse Heisman Candidates
  1. Luke Falk - Washington State Cougars
  2. Nick Chubb - Georgia Bulldogs
